Hellboy
by Mike Mignola• 1997
Book
While not the original, Hellboy is certainly towards the apex of this kind of story. The plot is pure pulp, ripped from the pages of countless myths, legends, and penny dreadfuls that came before it. While Hellboy himself is quite witty, he employs it judiciously, usually as punctuation on the intense action of a scene, making for excellent shifts in pacing and tone across the many stories he's carried.
Not to be outplayed, the art in these books is iconic; literally and figuratively. Mignola's flat, graphic, shape-driven design is genre defining, and his liberal application of large shapes of pure black create bombastic compositions and atmosphere that leaps from the pages.
