Mad Max: Fury Road
Mad Max is such an excellent example of this stoic, reluctant hero, and the original entries into this series are each incredible in their own right, but Fury Road felt like the distillation of everything excellent about the adventures of Max.
The Post-Apocalypse has become an excuse to mute every color and cast the world in a near total filter of desaturation. Fury Road raged against this to make a film that was aggressively colorful, and then trimmed the fat off of every moment to make a breathless experience that truly feels like a theme park ride. Don't mistake that for a lack of emotional depth and character though. Even though this movie is wall-to-wall action, the character moments are borne out of these set pieces, making this distant sequel as impactful as any of the original entries.
